This week I thought it would be good to look at a couple of recent kitchen renovations in South Wales and highlight some of the key features.
The two kitchen renovations in question belong to Mr and Mrs Baker of Barry, South Wales and Mr and Mrs Thomas of Tonteg, South Wales. Mr and Mrs Baker now have a stunning Schuller Gala handleless in Champagne and Mr an Mrs Thomas have a fantastic Clonmel shaker style kitchen in light oak. They are both very different but equally beautiful.
So lets start with the Schuller Gala. As I said, this is the handleless construction in Champagne. The high gloss lacquer finish door offers a simple contemporary look with clean lines and symmetrical layout. Fitted to the base units is a 20mm Silestone worktop in Unsui, which complement the integrated Silestone sink and LED colour changing worktop lighting system.
Mr and Mrs Baker opted for Miele appliances. They include a single oven, warming draw and the simply brilliant combination steam oven. If you haven’t had a look at the latest steam ovens, I can strongly recommend you do. Regardless of the manufacturer you choose, steam cooking is the way forward. They make a great alternative to the microwave.
Across the room, Mr and Mrs Baker have an open living. Mounted on the wall is a rather lovely 50″ LED 3DTV. I designed a cocobolo panel to go behind the TV. Behind the panel, I have recessed another LED lighting system to match the kitchen worktop. Under the television I have installed another short row of Schuller units which tie the whole kitchen and living space together.
In contrast, Mr and Mrs Thomas’ kitchen renovation is a classic shaker style. It combines traditional elements, such as a range cooker, with a modern American style fridge freezer. The use of a neutral colour palette has also played a role in taking this room in a stylish, understated direction.
The Clonmel units are made to a fantastically high standard and are one of my absolute favourites. This is a very solidly constructed kitchen made with 18mm grade A boards in a rigid assembly. The doors have chamfered inner angles, making it practical for cleaning as well as great to look at. The Silestone work surface in 30mm really sets off this classic look.
The heart of this kitchen is the Belling 90cm Range Cooker in cream. I love the colour and the way it just ‘works’ with the rest of the kitchen, especially the accompanying fridge freezer by Rangemaster. Topping off the traditional elements are a belfast style sink by Villeroy and Boch along with a set of traditional taps by Perrin and Rowe.
These have been two very rewarding projects two work on and both clients have been a dream to work with. I think they are both fantastic examples and I hope they offer you some inspiration.
