Jo and Ian live in a historic Grade 2 listed home on the outskirts of Llantwit Major. This is a building of historic significance that demands a level of care and responsible upkeep. That’s exactly what it gets from Jo and Ian. They are on a mission to maintain their property in a way that respects its history. Any improvements or renovations are designed to enhance, never detract or destroy. As a result, they have a stunning home in a beautiful part of the country.

After a successful kitchen renovation in the previous year, we were called back to renovate the master bathroom, as well as make sense of a small room that leads to it. This was no easy task. The dimensions of both areas required a level of compromise. The wish list was long, demanding as much functionality as possible. That included a luxurious walk in shower, a free standing bath and a spectacular vanity unit that catered for ‘him and her’.

Ceri focused on the bathroom first.  Due to the nature of working on listed buildings, there are limits to the changes that are allowed. Structural changes require permission from the authorities, as does the choice of window and exterior drainage solutions. The angle of the vaulted ceiling was a limiting factor but there was just enough usable wall space to make her designs work. In order to minimise any potential conflict with the planning authority, major plumbing was left unchanged. That meant the bath, sink, shower and toilet remained in, or close to its original position.

These restrictions allowed Ceri, with significant input from Jo and Ian, to focus on the decorative elements and the style of the products. Giant marble effect tiles from Mandarin Stone were used for the shower and toilet walls. The matt finish complemented the matt black of the brassware  that was used around the room.

The modern stand alone bath took its position under the velux, next to the large open alcove. The alcove “frames” the bath perfectly, whilst providing the ideal location for a romantic candle and a glass of champagne.

Another major feature to this room is the modern vanity unit along the only side wall available. This was a very bespoke solution. The Y-Line cabinetry was supplied by Pronorm. The matt black detailing on the drawer fronts complemented the black taps. Whilst the fluted walnut effect blended beautifully with the Oak tiling and the warm shades in the marble effect walls. The top of the vanity unit is a work of art. Made completely of Silestone, The integrated double sinks offer a seamless solution that is as practical as it is gorgeous.

We are delighted with how this room has turned out. The process delivered some unique challenges that we tackled head on. Focused as always on great design, practical solutions and, most of all, happy clients.
